Church History

Isaiah 59:21 The Lord says: "My people, I promise to give you my Spirit and my message. These will be my gifts to you and your families forever." CEV

The College Park Presbyterian Church was organized May 20, 1900. Today, over a hundred years later, this church still serves the Lord in the same place.

A committee of three ministers and two elders from the Hapeville Presbyterian Church were selected by the Atlanta Presbytery. They met in the home of John Temple Graves, along with a group of fourteen persons who presented letters for membership and were received and enrolled as charter members.

Sunday School laid the foundation for the church and from 1900 until 1904, when the first church building was completed, met in the Cox College Chapel. The new church was a white frame building with six columns across the portico. The cost of the building was $4,000.

Preaching took place whenever a minister was available. With a new church, a minister was now needed. Though we had supply ministers, it was not until 1906 when Dr. Joseph Bingham Mack, D. D. came to us and became our first minister.

Through the years dedicated families and individuals with faith have worked diligently to make this church what it has become. It has proclaimed the gospel. It has offered to members and visitors alike a comfortable haven where love is felt in which to worship.

We have had our building programs. Sunday School rooms were built in 1951. The manse was built in 1953. The present sanctuary was completed in 1958. Our beautiful Wicks organ was installed in the church in 1966.

Our dedicated ministers have led us in the right paths. Many citizens in our community will remember Dr. Clarence E. Piephoff, Rev. Carl Smith, Rev. Philo McKinnon and Dr. Martin M. Huggins. Now we have a new minister leading the journey into our second century. Rev. Jay Thomas assumed the role of pastor in April 2006

For many years College Park Presbyterian Church has identified itself as having "A Tradition of Love". Over a period of time it has become a true mission minded church. A century of service has exemplified the mission spirit, for we have reached out in love, touching the lives of people all the way from College Park "unto the uttermost parts of the earth". The Lord has kept the promise of the Spirit and the message. Thanks be to God.
