RUBEN ROMAN

Last summer, Eliot Lawrence spent most of his vacation time in the Oaxaca area of Mexico visiting the families of some of the young men from our congregation, many of whom are members of El Salvador Divino Presbyterian Church there. When he returned home, Eliot presented during an 11 o’clock service a most fascinating and wonderfully inspiring talk about his experiences.

“ When I was in Oaxaca/San Bartolme, I was always amazed at what the people do in the name of Christianity.  Part of it is that there is no other activity to do, but I'm sure that if they wanted to, they could be involved in some illicit activity, and they aren't.  Just simple people doing a lot of work for Dios.”
 
Eliot relates a recent incident about one of these young men:

Ruben Roman and I were in my music room; Ruben was playing an acoustic guitar, mainly singing and playing praise songs that he has made up.  In the mix, I recognized a hymn, I Surrender All.  I said, “You know that's a hymn, right?”  He answered, “Yes.” He then told me how his brother sings it, and also how the cantor (Mercellino, father of Jacob) sings it.  Mercellino is the only person in the church that can read music and has a hymnal with music.  I asked, “How can you remember all that?”  (It has been about five years since he was there.)

Ruben said that he has been singing that hymn since he was five or seven. He went on to tell me the significance of the hymn.  The first time he ever preached, he was twelve years old. He and a relative walked for five hours to another town where Ruben taught five older ladies how to sing the hymn; the women could neither read nor speak espanol. (They speak Zapotek.)  Preaching involves conveying the meaning of each song; they take their music messages very seriously.
 
To me, this is mind-boggling!!!   For a 12 year old to walk five miles.... to be responsible for preaching the Word through song, and to even have the knowledge of the song.... is something that my American perspective cannot understand or comprehend.

Now, Ruben is a leader in our church and a gifted pastor. He currently participates in the Lay Leadership classes at Columbia Seminary. On April 20 at our 2:00 service, Ruben preached the sermon; his delivery is from the heart and is easy to listen to. Each week he blesses and inspires us with his gift of music.
 
I don't think Ruben's many experiences are unique; I believe that our fantastic congregation is a true blessing to us all...it certainly is to me.  I have been enriched by the treasures shared by my Hispanic friends greater than could mountains of gold.

El verano pasado, Eliot Lawrence pasó la mayor parte de sus vacaciones en el área de Oaxaca en México visitando las familias de algunos de los jovenes de nuestra congregación, muchos de los cuales son miembros de la Iglesia Presbiteriana El Salvador Divino. Cuándo él volvió a casa, Eliot presentó durante un culto de las 11 de la mañana la mas fascinante y maravillosamente inspirada charla de sus experiencias.

" Cuando estuve en Oaxaca/San Bartolome, yo siempre estuve asombrado de lo que las personas hacen en el nombre del Cristianismo. Parte de ello es que no hay ninguna otra actividad para hacer, pero estoy seguro que si ellos quisieran, ellos podrían estar implicados en alguna actividad ilícita, pero ellos no. Eran solamente personas sencillas haciendo mucho trabajo para Dios."

Eliot relata un incidente reciente acerca de uno de estos jovenes.
Ruben Roman y yo estuvamos en mi cuarto de música; Ruben tocaba una guitarra acústica, cantando principalmente y tocando coritos que él ha compuesto. En la combinación, yo reconocí un himno, yo Rindo Todo. Le dije, "¿Sabes que es un himno, cierto?" El contestó, "Sí". El entonces me dijo cómo su hermano lo canta, y también cómo el solista (Mercellino, el padre de Jacob) lo canta. Mercellino es el único en la iglesia que puede leer música y tiene un himnario con música. Le pregunté, "¿Cómo le puedes recordar todo eso?" (Han pasado acerca de cinco años desde que él estuvo allí).

Ruben dijo que él ha estado cantando ese himno desde que tenia cinco o siete años. El me dijo el significado del himno. La primera vez que él predicó, él tenia doce años. El y un pariente caminaron por cinco horas a otro pueblo donde Ruben enseñó a cinco señoras ancianas cómo cantar el himno; las mujeres no podian leer ni hablar español. (Ellas hablan Zapoteco). Predicar implica transmitir el significado de cada canción; ellos toman sus mensajes de música muy seriamente.

¡ Para mí, esto me deja alucinado!!! Para un niño de 12 años que camine cinco millas... para ser responsable de predicar la Palabra a travez de una canción, e incluso tener el conocimiento de la canción... es algo que mi perspectiva norteamericana no puede entender ni puede comprender.

Ruben es un líder en nuestra iglesia y un pastor talentoso. El actualmente toma parte en las clases de Liderazgo Laico en el Seminario de Columbia. En nuestro culto de las 2:00 el 20 de Abril, Ruben predicó el sermón; su entrega viene del corazón y es fácil de escuchar. Cada semana él nos bendice y nos inspira con su regalo de música.
Yo no pienso que muchas experiencias de Ruben son unicas; creo que nuestra congregación fantástica es una bendición verdadera para todos nosotros...ciertamente es para mí. He sido enriquecido por los tesoros compartidos por mis amigos hispanos mucho más que montañas de oro.
